IRENE is not the only "Storm" ready to sweep the Country-side

Perry leading Gallup Poll nationally. . . .
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/gallup-perry-leading-nationally-romney-second-paul-third-212542697.html

                                                  "RegalPerry"  Handsome president?
Perry, publicly declared candidate2 weeks ago, would change Constitution 7 ways. . . . .(-This has been in the works for some time. . . .? )
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/seven-ways-rick-perry-wants-change-constitution-131634517.html

And, you guessed it, DOMA to be re-established nationally in all 50 State. . . .the end of "any rights for GAY people. . . "

6. The federal Constitution should define marriage as between one man and one woman in all 50 states.
Despite saying last month that he was "fine with" states like New York allowing gay marriage, Perry has now said he supports a constitutional amendment that would permanently ban gay marriage throughout the country and overturn any state laws that define marriage beyond a relationship between one man and one woman.

Now, in your mind, tick off the power-groups which would whole-heartedly support #6 and others.  Remember, Mr Perry and the Apostolic Reformation Church will have only as much power as WE allow them to hold and exercise.  HEADS UP!  "See the lovely ovens they are preparing for us. . ."

Perry, Bachmann, Romney, are misfortunes of our time. I see that Perry has a lot of jobs in Texas, but most of them are low
paying=service sector jobs. Bachmann is a clown and wants to
run a circus, and Romney wants to
turn us all into Mormons, or is is
Morons. Just a good way to start the weekend. And Justin and Northern folks, I pray that the winds will calm down. You have to pray to Holy Spirit, He runs that Department. I have been through
5 'Canes, and they aren't much fun. There are many storms we have
to ride out and take them, One at
a time. Hoping the Winds die down
before hitting DC. I know I am old, but more than Liberal.

Perry is only one nutter amongst many nutters currently trying to be Republican candidate. They seem to be trying to outdo each other on their levels of religious zealotry.

One can only hope that there are sufficient moderate Americans to prevent any of these lunatics from getting anywhere near the White House.

If there's any praying to be done, it must surely be for whatever miracle is required to get Obama re-elected. But religion ought to have no place in the political process.

And no, he's not good looking - not even a little. He's got a smug, holier-than-thou look about him and the sooner he's confined to history as an also-ran, the better.

Coop, no need to wait for J's opine. Just pull out your copy of the United States constitution and read Article V. All it takes is 2/3 of both houses of Congress to send a constitutional amendment to the States for ratification. If, God forbid, Perry were elected, there's a good bet that the R's would also control at least that percentage of both houses.

Of course, it takes 3/4 of the states to approve an amendment; but in such a political storm this too might be possible.

To all US citizens who read this blog, get off your asses, get registered, and vote at every chance. Oh, and get last night's trick to register too. :)

Sorry, gentlemen. I refuse to take seriously a candidate who doesn't believe in evolution. This big wind off the Texas steppes has a lot of supporters, but the game is very early yet. I hope my Republican friends realize before it's too late that politics is like football; there's no substitute for victory, and it must be won in the general election. Republican religious extremeism is the one thing that can save Obama from defeat, so why are these guys giving him so much ammunition? Only Huntsman and Paul are willing to say they believe in evolution. There may, however, be more candidates in the wings. I sure hope someone like Chris Christie is willing to stand up for our country and get us out of this mess.
But don't misunderstand me. I'll vote for any of these Bible thumping crackers rather than keep our sophomoric Socialist president in power. It's the economy!
And Justin, please lay off the ageist comments. You sound like all the stereotypical young gays who believe they are over the hill at 30. The twits who believe that bullshit have no brains.

As an old ad man myself, I recognize that photograph for what it is... a con. It uses Perry's good looks to advantage, and has him positioned slightly higher than the viewer to create a sense of vision and leadership and confidence... the kind of man we should all follow and "look up to".

People like Hitler and Stalin used the same kind of promotional techniques... a god-like figure.

You've made a good point, Coop, but I honestly believe my country is in such terrible shape that fixing its economy and financial health trumps all other issues right now. You have to vote to quash the greatest evil, and we know full well that none of these Christian right initiatives will ever be enacted. This recession/depression is killing us now. There's a whole generation of youngsters getting out of college who can't work. If we don't stop this cold we will end up like Weimar Germany, and you know what that led to!

Alastair said...

Thank you, Gary.

Perry (and several of his fellow candidates) seem to be determined to remove basic human rights from a reasonably large section of society based on nothing more than prejudice. It's easier to whip up popular support if you can make scapegoats of "someone else". This tactic was tried extensively in the 1930s in Germany. It didn't work out too well then.

Of course, there have been religious extremists throughout history. In Europe, they're now largely confined to the fringes but Americans seem still to be enthralled by them, though, in practice, their actual power is limited by the various checks and balances in the US system.

It's easy to be a scaremonger here. In all likelihood Perry wouldn't be able to get any of his ammendments through, even if he were to get the candidacy. What worries me is that the rise of the religious wing has been continuing all along and will continue. Americans need to wake up and realise that there is a large minority determined to inflict their social values on the rest of society. There needs to be a determined move to say "no" to it or else it's just going to continue to fester.

Alastair said...

You're right, J, the US economy is in a mess, but there's no need to sell the basic human rights of gay people to fix it. Recognising the worth of all the citizens of the country has to be a prerequisite for anyone aspiring to high office.

The problem for the Republicans is that the social conservatives have taken over at the expense of the fiscal conservatives. Only they can decide which path they want to follow.

Hi all...been a bit o' time since my last entry to the 'Dunes'...

Politically, I agree with the statements made here. Republicans, I believe have made it clear they are for Corporate interests, keeping the rich wealthy, pushing laws of their interpretation of morality and making the middle class less of what it has worked and fought so hard for...fairness and equality.

Above all, their 'better than thou' attitude that it's ok for the taxpayers/middle class to bail their sorry butts out of financial failure, pay for the nations debt...but not ok to share taxes to level when Clinton was in office. Sheesh! The Party of 'no' will continue to bash this President and be against anything, even their own ideas for the nation's economic recovery.

I was so flabbergasted to hear Eric Cantor say that federal relief for Irene's potential damage should be offset with 'cuts'...I say, how about cutting your fat salary I pay for with taxes...you 'no heart' dirt bag! It's going to be a long 14 months to the election.

I agree! GET OUT and Vote!!!!

The idea that Perry would do a better job with the economy than Obama is absurd. The reason that Obama hasn't done better is that he and Geithner been much too conservative, not too liberal. Perry's economic "ideas" are no different those that the cheney/bush/rove regime practiced for 8 years. If anyone has amnesia, they produced the greatest economic disaster since the Great Depression.

And it's also absurd to give Perry any great credit for "creating" jobs in Texas. Governors don't have that much impact, positive or negative, on job creation in their states.
