Interesting. This suggests there may be light at the end of the tunnel.
You know, J, I see your comment. . . I think that by taking the invitation of Francis. . .to really get involved with his Year of Jubilee. . .in the old Hebrew understanding of Jubilee. As I see things so far, I think "Jubilee" means to enter into the experience of MERCY. . .first off, what IS Mercy? Then ho do I experience Mercy? Do I OR NOT?
I cannot show you 'mercy' unless I am able to receive 'mercy'. . .unless I can be merciful with myself. I can talk about "the mercy of God' etc. . BUT I need to personalize that mercy for myself. There is a 3atin axion: "Nemo dat quod not habet....No one can give what he does not have."
So I must be able first to forgive/accept. . LOVE myself before I will risk accepting the Mercy of/from anyone else. See my thinking. . .for now? Ultimately, I think accepting the God whose name is MERCY and all that follows is the huge road to freedom of mind and heart and spirit.
I am a work in process. How about you?
JUSTIN
I honestly think the only thing for which a person should seek forgiveness and mercy in the sexual arena is the sort of lust that victimizes another. Of course, Tennessee Williams wrote that cruelty is the only unforgivable sin, and he was probably right about that. What I see in Francis' remarks us a subtextual invitation to gays to become participating members of the church community. If you define God as mercy there is scarcely room for condemnation, and there certainly has been a lot of condemnation in the history of the Roman church when it comes to gays. I'd say, Justin, that gay folks have their collective foot in the door of the church, and that it won't be long before St. Paul's condemnation will become about as binding on the faithful as all that stuff in Deuteronomy and Leviticus.
