G'day JustinO,
Our brothers across the Tasman have beaten us to the punch.
New Zealand's parliament has legalised same-sex marriage, the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to do so.
Lawmakers approved the bill, amending the 1955 marriage act, despite opposition from Christian lobby groups.
The bill was passed with a wide majority, with 77 votes in favour and 44 against.
And if you think our accent is weird, wait till you hear the Kiwis!

Gary, I always thought that the land of Oz was larger and smarter
than your next door neighbor. Apparently they sort of kicked your
butts. Maybe I think it maybe the lady whom is running your vast continent. I mean it is Huge, Overwhelming Large and Beautiful.. The Land of Oz is
not your run of the mill piece of
Land. Just hold tight and maybe your country will think it over.
Good Luck to Gay Marriage in Oz and
the Good Old USA, you can do any thing except Marry the One You Love......
Gary, I had just sent Justin a link to video of the legislature passing the bill right before I read your post.
The Kiwis did not legalize same-sex marriage so much as they redefined the term marriage so that it could not be used to discriminate. An interesting twist.
Love the way the Kiwi parliament breaks into a Maori Love Song after passing the bill. Wonderful stuff, and brought a tear to my eye as well.
Kiwis are a great people. I wish our parliament was run a little more like theirs. Best speech during the debate was given by a straight speaker....worth the watch I can assure you...makes you pleased to be a part of the human race. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2013/04/18/09/26/nz-mp-makes-hilarious-pro-gay-marriage-speech
Actually, Rad Joe, I was looking at a world map today and noticed that Oz is much, much bigger than India, which I've always thought of as being huge because of its population. Oz is the world's biggest island and smallest continent. Anyway, our PM and leader of the opposition say the official situation in Oz in relation to same sex marriage hasn't changed. They forgot to say YET. Hehe. The Kiwis beating us to the punch is very embarrassing for the Oz government, I think. Not to mention the religious establishment.
And Richard, I agree that the Kiwis were very clever in redefining marriage so that it can't discriminate. How sensible!
And Greg, that Kiwi MP's speech is a classic! Thanks for the link! Very funny stuff indeed. We need pollies like him over here.
Australia is 50 years behind the 'Western World ' in every aspect of life..... Aboriginals are neglected and derided at! The Federal and State legal system is antiquated and out of touch with reality..The police both at state and federal level, is racist and ignorant....But I did see two guys holding hands in Melbourne....The only place/city that makes Australia an interesting place indeed! Sydney is kitschy!!!! Cheers Dr. Jeanluc Capri
