In addition to the very fine list provided above, don't forget to ask around / search papers for church-hosted clambakes.
Many New England small-to-medium sized congreagations hold these to help buy new equipment or fund youth group programs.
Some of these are just incredible with all the trimmings. Friendly people too and help for a good cause.
First time I took my wife to one, however, she ate about two clams. She was from the Midwest and it took some getting used-to for her. Now she's an avid fan!

Never had a clambake. Elvis Presley had something to do with a clambake but, other than that, I'm pretty much ignorant. I suspect if I don't like oysters, squid, octopus or any kind of shellfish, then I wouldn't like clams. Ew.
A couple of years ago I went out on a fishing boat near here to take a few pics. Here's one of the captain holding two lobsters he caught in one of his traps.

Duh! I should have googled it myself I guess. But I can see why you did that for me rather than answer in your own words, cos the term can mean so much.
I did not realise that it was such a err....generic term for steamed and/or baked seafood in general, not just baked clams. But more than that, it is a social feast, an event, fun. No wonder it is spoken of with far-away looks in people's eyes, ha! Beach fun. Memories.
It is very much like a New Zealand Maori hangi in that steam and heat from hot rocks cook the covered food. Very native and traditional. Brilliant.
I now understand why I had such a hazy idea of what the term meant, cos it means so many things.
The origins of the feast are obvious I guess. I do love the 'proper' beach venue and gathering, a very social and celebrational thing it can be.
When I was young we did similar beach cooking. Living in a coastal small town and not having much money my parents always made our fun and entertainemnt for us by doing things like camping on the beach, fishing, dragging nets and having wondrous feasts. This conversation brings back some good memories, good times. I was lucky, I had brilliant parents.
