Jack Kevorkian

Dear Justin--I know this is off your beaten path, but I am constrained to note the passing of a great civil rights hero, Jack Kevorkian, who had a better working knowledge of the Bill of Rights and the philosopy of liberterianism that  a whole lot of the stiffs out there.  He went to prison in his crusade to get the government out of just about the most important decision an individual can make: when his life will end.
J

I wish all humankind to be free from constraint. . . and I wish that especially for my/our dear lawyer friend J. Therefore being free myself but  not free from the constraints of friendship and affection, by my free choice, I am posting this note from J .  We all have varying views and opinions on "matters of consequence" and at times we differ strongly but that ought never get in the way of or sever the bonds of friendship.  I would be bored to death if everyone here and everywhere else thought, felt. acted the same as I do.   Perish the thought, even.  LOL.  I shudder at the imagined room full of  me!  sheeesssshhhh. . . ;-)

Another good sign of intellectual and spiritual growth among Catholic people in their ability and willingness to commit themselves to social justice in the varied ways there is need for a voice of respect, acceptance, affirmation for the dignity of all people.  As we see the old fears and prejudices breaking down to the forceful healing of mind and spirit  more and more the damaging attitudes of another era and other generations fall away and are seen for what they are/were: "dangerous and harmful to all God's children."

Presidential Proclamation on LGBT Month

The President has presented a Presidential Proclamation on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Month. Read an excerpt from the press release below:
Presidential Proclamation--Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month
From the White House, Office of the Press Secretary
The White House Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release May 31, 2011
Presidential Proclamation--Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month
-------
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
The story of America's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community is the story of our fathers and sons, our mothers and daughters, and our friends and neighbors who continue the task of making our country a more perfect Union. It is a story about the struggle to realize the great American promise that all people can live with dignity and fairness under the law. Each June, we commemorate the courageous individuals who have fought to achieve this promise for LGBT Americans, and we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Since taking office, my Administration has made significant progress towards achieving equality for LGBT Americans. Last December, I was proud to sign the repeal of the discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. With this repeal, gay and lesbian Americans will be able to serve openly in our Armed Forces for the first time in our Nation's history. Our national security will be strengthened and the heroic contributions these Americans make to our military, and have made throughout our history, will be fully recognized.
